
Where the Detail Goes on an Old Cabinet Door, and How to Get It Back
There is a specific complaint we hear in Pasadena kitchens, and people almost never have the words for it. They stand in a room they have lived in for years, in a bungalow off Los Robles or up near Bungalow Heaven, and they say some version of: the cabinets look tired, but they are not damaged, and I do not know what is wrong with them.
Usually nothing is wrong with them in the way that word normally means. Nothing is broken. The doors close. The finish is not peeling. What has happened is that the detail is gone, and the eye notices that long before the brain can name it.
This is a walk through where that detail went, what it takes to get it back, and where the honest limits are.
A Coat of Paint Is Thinner Than You Think, and Thicker Than the Detail
Dried paint film measures somewhere around one and a half thousandths of an inch per coat. Two coats gets you to roughly the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. On a flat wall that is invisible, which is exactly why nobody ever objects to the first repaint.
Now look at the edge of a cabinet face frame from the 1920s. Somebody ran a quarter-round bead on it, maybe an eighth of an inch of relief, with a crisp quirk where the bead meets the flat. The whole visual effect of that detail comes from the shadow the quirk throws, and the shadow depends on the corner being sharp.
Paint does not fill a corner evenly. Surface tension pulls it into the inside angle and thins it on the outside edge, so every coat softens the quirk more than it softens the flat. One repaint takes a percentage. Seven repaints over eighty years takes most of it. The bead is still physically there, but it is now a soft bump with no shadow line, and the door reads as generic.
The same thing happens to five-piece doors at the panel bevel, to cove returns under a countertop lip, and worst of all to any detail with a tight inside radius, because that is where the paint pools thickest.
Nobody Did Anything Wrong
Worth saying plainly, because homeowners often assume a previous painter was careless. Almost always they were not. Each of those repaints was a reasonable decision made by somebody who wanted a clean kitchen, and each one added an amount of film that was genuinely negligible on its own.
Accumulation is the problem, and accumulation has no single guilty party. It also means the fix is not a better painter. It is subtraction.
How Much Actually Has To Come Off
This is the question that decides the price, and the answer is different on different parts of the same door.
On flat panels, often nothing. If the existing film is sound, well bonded and not badly ridged, then degreasing, a hard scuff and a bonding primer is correct. Stripping a sound flat panel is money spent on nothing, because a flat surface has no detail to recover. We will tell you when that is the case.
On profiles, almost always something. The moldings, the bead, the panel bevel, the cove: those are the parts carrying the visual weight and the parts where the film has stacked deepest. Chemical stripping, worked with plastic and brass detail tools, sometimes with a poultice left to dwell where a cove is deep enough that a single pass will not reach the bottom.
We use non-steel tools for a reason. Old growth fir and soft pine bruise under a steel scraper, and a bruise does not sand out. It shows as a dark crushed patch under a light finish months later, once the coating has had time to settle into the compressed grain.
The goal is not usually bare wood. The goal is the last sound layer. If we can reach a well-bonded original enamel with the profile still crisp under it, that is a perfectly good foundation and stripping further is just extra hours and extra chemical.
Test the Old Paint Before You Open It
Household paint carried lead until 1978. Most of the housing stock we work in around Pasadena, Altadena and South Pasadena was built decades before that, frequently with a dozen layers, and the older layers are the ones underneath.
So we test what we plan to disturb. If it reads positive, the method changes rather than the job being refused: wet stripping instead of dry abrasion, containment on the work area, HEPA extraction on anything that does produce dust, and waste bagged and disposed of properly.
In a kitchen this matters more than anywhere else in the house. It is the room where food is prepared and where small children spend the most time on the floor. Running an orbital sander over an unknown eighty-year-old film in that room is not a defensible way to work, whatever the schedule says.
The Repairs You Do Now Because You Cannot Do Them Later
Once doors are off and stripped, the faults are visible, and they are remarkably consistent across houses of this era.
Hinge mortises wear oval. The screw holes elongate, the door sags, and the reveal along the top goes wedge-shaped. A longer screw is not the fix and it usually splits the stile. The fix is hardwood plugs glued into the old holes, left to cure, then the mortise re-cut clean.
Glue joints fail at the bottom rail first, because that is where steam and spills collect over decades. A doweled joint that has let go gets pulled apart, cleaned back to wood, re-glued and clamped square.
Stiles split near the strike plate. Dents in a rail will often steam most of the way back out if the fibers were crushed rather than cut, which is always worth trying before reaching for filler.
Filler is last, and it goes in thin. Packing compound into a corner to save a step is how you lose the corner you just spent two days recovering.
Primer Is Not One Product
A single run of old cabinets is rarely one substrate. In the same kitchen we will find original oil enamel, patches of bare fir where the stripper reached wood, open grain that will bleed tannin, and a yellow greasy shadow on the two doors nearest the range.
Those want different primers and they are not interchangeable. Bonding primer over sound gloss. Stain blocking, often shellac based, over tannin and over smoke or grease shadows, because a waterborne topcoat will not bury those no matter how many coats you apply. And degreasing before all of it, since a kitchen door carries a film of aerosolized cooking oil that nothing sticks to.
Doors Get Finished Flat
Doors and drawer fronts come off on the first day, labeled on the hinge edge, and are finished horizontally. That is physics rather than convenience. A coating on a flat surface has time to flow out and level. The same coating on a vertical door face begins sagging immediately and pools in the lower half of every cove, which puts film back exactly where you just removed it.
Waterborne alkyd is our default: it levels like an oil, it cures hard, and it will not amber over a pale color within two years the way traditional oil enamel did. On a hard-used family kitchen a two-part urethane is tougher, at the cost of being much less forgiving to apply.
We sand between coats, and we are aiming for thin. A thin hard film keeps the profile and resists blocking. A thick soft film buries the profile and glues itself to the frame on the first hot week of the year.
The weather here is part of the schedule. Hot dry inland afternoons and a Santa Ana wind will skin a coating before it finishes flowing, so finish coats go on in the morning. Dry time and cure time are different numbers: doors feel dry within hours and are not fully hardened for two to three weeks, which is why we hang them with felt bumpers and ask you to be gentle for a fortnight.
When Replacing Is the Better Answer
We would rather say this than have you find out afterwards.
Replace when the boxes are particle board that has swollen and crumbled at the sink. Replace when half the doors are missing and the profile cannot be matched. Replace when the layout genuinely does not work for how you cook, because a beautifully refinished kitchen you hate using is a waste of everybody’s time.
Keep and refinish when the boxes are solid fir or pine, the doors are doweled and still square, and the profiles are intact under the paint. That describes most original Pasadena bungalow kitchens. It is furniture, it was made by hand, and the usual replacement is sprayed MDF at three to five times the cost of bringing back what you already own.
Start With One Door
Whatever you are considering, the cheapest useful step is a single test door. Strip it, prime it, finish it, hang it back up and live with it for a few days in your own light. You will see the sheen, the color and exactly how much of the bead came back, and you will know more than any quote can tell you.
