Where the Detail Goes on an Old Cabinet Door, and How to Get It Back

There is a specific complaint we hear in Pasadena kitchens, and people almost never have the words for it. They stand in a room they have lived in for years, in a bungalow off Los Robles or up near Bungalow Heaven, and they say some version of: the cabinets look tired, but they are not damaged, and I do not know what is wrong with them.

Usually nothing is wrong with them in the way that word normally means. Nothing is broken. The doors close. The finish is not peeling. What has happened is that the detail is gone, and the eye notices that long before the brain can name it.

This is a walk through where that detail went, what it takes to get it back, and where the honest limits are.

A Coat of Paint Is Thinner Than You Think, and Thicker Than the Detail

Dried paint film measures somewhere around one and a half thousandths of an inch per coat. Two coats gets you to roughly the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. On a flat wall that is invisible, which is exactly why nobody ever objects to the first repaint.

Now look at the edge of a cabinet face frame from the 1920s. Somebody ran a quarter-round bead on it, maybe an eighth of an inch of relief, with a crisp quirk where the bead meets the flat. The whole visual effect of that detail comes from the shadow the quirk throws, and the shadow depends on the corner being sharp.

Paint does not fill a corner evenly. Surface tension pulls it into the inside angle and thins it on the outside edge, so every coat softens the quirk more than it softens the flat. One repaint takes a percentage. Seven repaints over eighty years takes most of it. The bead is still physically there, but it is now a soft bump with no shadow line, and the door reads as generic.

The same thing happens to five-piece doors at the panel bevel, to cove returns under a countertop lip, and worst of all to any detail with a tight inside radius, because that is where the paint pools thickest.

Nobody Did Anything Wrong

Worth saying plainly, because homeowners often assume a previous painter was careless. Almost always they were not. Each of those repaints was a reasonable decision made by somebody who wanted a clean kitchen, and each one added an amount of film that was genuinely negligible on its own.

Accumulation is the problem, and accumulation has no single guilty party. It also means the fix is not a better painter. It is subtraction.

How Much Actually Has To Come Off

This is the question that decides the price, and the answer is different on different parts of the same door.

On flat panels, often nothing. If the existing film is sound, well bonded and not badly ridged, then degreasing, a hard scuff and a bonding primer is correct. Stripping a sound flat panel is money spent on nothing, because a flat surface has no detail to recover. We will tell you when that is the case.

On profiles, almost always something. The moldings, the bead, the panel bevel, the cove: those are the parts carrying the visual weight and the parts where the film has stacked deepest. Chemical stripping, worked with plastic and brass detail tools, sometimes with a poultice left to dwell where a cove is deep enough that a single pass will not reach the bottom.

We use non-steel tools for a reason. Old growth fir and soft pine bruise under a steel scraper, and a bruise does not sand out. It shows as a dark crushed patch under a light finish months later, once the coating has had time to settle into the compressed grain.

The goal is not usually bare wood. The goal is the last sound layer. If we can reach a well-bonded original enamel with the profile still crisp under it, that is a perfectly good foundation and stripping further is just extra hours and extra chemical.

Test the Old Paint Before You Open It

Household paint carried lead until 1978. Most of the housing stock we work in around Pasadena, Altadena and South Pasadena was built decades before that, frequently with a dozen layers, and the older layers are the ones underneath.

So we test what we plan to disturb. If it reads positive, the method changes rather than the job being refused: wet stripping instead of dry abrasion, containment on the work area, HEPA extraction on anything that does produce dust, and waste bagged and disposed of properly.

In a kitchen this matters more than anywhere else in the house. It is the room where food is prepared and where small children spend the most time on the floor. Running an orbital sander over an unknown eighty-year-old film in that room is not a defensible way to work, whatever the schedule says.

The Repairs You Do Now Because You Cannot Do Them Later

Once doors are off and stripped, the faults are visible, and they are remarkably consistent across houses of this era.

Hinge mortises wear oval. The screw holes elongate, the door sags, and the reveal along the top goes wedge-shaped. A longer screw is not the fix and it usually splits the stile. The fix is hardwood plugs glued into the old holes, left to cure, then the mortise re-cut clean.

Glue joints fail at the bottom rail first, because that is where steam and spills collect over decades. A doweled joint that has let go gets pulled apart, cleaned back to wood, re-glued and clamped square.

Stiles split near the strike plate. Dents in a rail will often steam most of the way back out if the fibers were crushed rather than cut, which is always worth trying before reaching for filler.

Filler is last, and it goes in thin. Packing compound into a corner to save a step is how you lose the corner you just spent two days recovering.

Primer Is Not One Product

A single run of old cabinets is rarely one substrate. In the same kitchen we will find original oil enamel, patches of bare fir where the stripper reached wood, open grain that will bleed tannin, and a yellow greasy shadow on the two doors nearest the range.

Those want different primers and they are not interchangeable. Bonding primer over sound gloss. Stain blocking, often shellac based, over tannin and over smoke or grease shadows, because a waterborne topcoat will not bury those no matter how many coats you apply. And degreasing before all of it, since a kitchen door carries a film of aerosolized cooking oil that nothing sticks to.

Doors Get Finished Flat

Doors and drawer fronts come off on the first day, labeled on the hinge edge, and are finished horizontally. That is physics rather than convenience. A coating on a flat surface has time to flow out and level. The same coating on a vertical door face begins sagging immediately and pools in the lower half of every cove, which puts film back exactly where you just removed it.

Waterborne alkyd is our default: it levels like an oil, it cures hard, and it will not amber over a pale color within two years the way traditional oil enamel did. On a hard-used family kitchen a two-part urethane is tougher, at the cost of being much less forgiving to apply.

We sand between coats, and we are aiming for thin. A thin hard film keeps the profile and resists blocking. A thick soft film buries the profile and glues itself to the frame on the first hot week of the year.

The weather here is part of the schedule. Hot dry inland afternoons and a Santa Ana wind will skin a coating before it finishes flowing, so finish coats go on in the morning. Dry time and cure time are different numbers: doors feel dry within hours and are not fully hardened for two to three weeks, which is why we hang them with felt bumpers and ask you to be gentle for a fortnight.

When Replacing Is the Better Answer

We would rather say this than have you find out afterwards.

Replace when the boxes are particle board that has swollen and crumbled at the sink. Replace when half the doors are missing and the profile cannot be matched. Replace when the layout genuinely does not work for how you cook, because a beautifully refinished kitchen you hate using is a waste of everybody’s time.

Keep and refinish when the boxes are solid fir or pine, the doors are doweled and still square, and the profiles are intact under the paint. That describes most original Pasadena bungalow kitchens. It is furniture, it was made by hand, and the usual replacement is sprayed MDF at three to five times the cost of bringing back what you already own.

Start With One Door

Whatever you are considering, the cheapest useful step is a single test door. Strip it, prime it, finish it, hang it back up and live with it for a few days in your own light. You will see the sheen, the color and exactly how much of the bead came back, and you will know more than any quote can tell you.

Cabinet Work, From Stripped Profile to Hung Door

Everything below is the same kitchen job broken into the pieces that actually take the hours. The order matters more than the list.

01Stripping Painted Profiles
Methylene-free strippers, poultice where a molding is deep, plastic and brass detail tools rather than steel that bruises soft old fir. We are trying to reach the last sound layer, not bare wood, unless bare wood is what the finish needs.
02Lead-Safe Work in Pre-1978 Kitchens
Test first. If the layers read positive we work wet, contain the room, use HEPA extraction and bag the waste. No open dry sanding of an unknown old film in a house where anybody eats.
03Repair Before Finish
Loose glue joints re-set, split stiles clamped, worn hinge mortises plugged with hardwood and re-cut, and dents in a rail steamed up where the grain will still come back. Filler goes in last, in thin passes, never packed into a corner to save a step.
04Priming for What Is Underneath
Old oil-based enamel, tannin from open-grain fir, a smoke-yellowed layer near a stove and a bare patch of sanded wood all want different primers. Bonding, stain-blocking, and shellac-based all live on the truck for exactly this reason.
05Spray Finishing Doors and Drawer Fronts
Doors come off, get labeled, and are finished flat. Waterborne alkyd or a two-part urethane depending on how hard the kitchen gets used. Sanded between coats so the film ends up thin, even, and hard rather than thick and soft.
06Interior Painting Around the Kitchen
Plaster walls, cased openings, picture rail and the trim that meets the cabinetry. Plaster is not drywall and it does not want the same patch, which is most of why the older houses here look wrong after a general repaint.

Questions About Old Cabinets, Finish and Fumes

Will painting my cabinets fill in the detail?
It will if the film keeps stacking. That is the actual mechanism behind the complaint, and it is not about the painter's hand being heavy. Each coat is thin, but old cabinets have already had five or six of them, so the bead is sitting under a sixteenth of an inch of accumulated paint before we arrive. If we take material off first and then put two thin coats back, the profile ends up sharper than it was when you called us.
Should I just replace the cabinets instead?
Sometimes yes. If the boxes are particle board that has swollen at the sink, if the layout genuinely does not work, or if half the doors are missing, replacement is the honest answer and we will say so. But a Pasadena bungalow kitchen usually has solid fir or pine boxes screwed to a wall and doweled doors that are still square. That is furniture. Replacing it with sprayed MDF is a downgrade dressed up as an upgrade, and it costs three to five times what refinishing costs.
How long am I without a kitchen?
Plan on about a week to ten working days for a full strip and refinish, and you keep the kitchen the whole time. Doors and drawer fronts come off on day one and go to the shop, so you lose the doors, not the counters, the sink or the range. Boxes and face frames get done in place over two or three of those days with containment up, and that is the only stretch where the room is genuinely awkward.
My house is from the 1920s. Is the old paint a problem?
Assume it is until a test says otherwise. Lead was in household paint until 1978 and most of what we work on predates that by decades, often with a dozen layers. We test the layers we intend to disturb. If it reads positive we switch to wet methods, chemical stripping and HEPA extraction, keep the work contained and bag the waste properly. What we will not do is put a random orbital sander on an unknown old film in a room where food is prepared.
What finish holds up on a kitchen door?
Waterborne alkyds have taken over this work for good reasons: they level well, they cure hard, and they do not amber the way old oil enamels did over a white. On a heavily used kitchen with children we will sometimes go to a two-part urethane instead, which is tougher and less forgiving to apply. Straight acrylic latex is fine on walls and wrong on a cabinet door, because it stays slightly soft and blocks against the frame in summer.
Does the hot dry weather here change anything?
It changes the schedule. Inland Pasadena afternoons and a Santa Ana wind will skin a coating before it has finished flowing out, and you get a surface that looks fine wet and dries with brush texture standing in it. So finish coats go on in the morning, sometimes with a retarder, and we do not spray exterior work when the surface is above the manufacturer's ceiling or when the wind is carrying grit off the foothills.
Can you match the color of the original finish?
Close, usually, and it is worth understanding what you are matching. An original 1920s kitchen was often a soft enamel in a pale green, cream or a warm gray, and what you see now is that color plus eighty years of yellowing and a layer of kitchen grease. Match it literally and you will get a dingy result. We normally take the original hue and clean it up slightly, then test it on one door in your own light before committing.

  3. Doors are finished off the houseLaid flat and sprayed horizontally, the coating levels instead of running down a vertical face and hanging in the cove. Boxes and face frames get brushed and rolled in place with the joints cut clean by hand.

Pluckandfeather refinishes kitchen cabinets in Pasadena, and the whole point of how we work is that an old door should still look like an old door when we are finished. Most of the cabinetry we touch was built between the 1910s and the 1940s, in Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival houses where somebody ran a real profile on a real shaper. Beaded face frames, cove returns, a quarter-round on the inside edge of a stile. That detail is the reason the kitchen is worth keeping, and it is the first thing a fast refinish destroys.

Detail disappears in a predictable way. Every coat of paint sits on the surface at roughly the thickness of a sheet of paper, which sounds like nothing until you count. Old finish, plus primer, plus two topcoats, and the crisp inside corner of a bead now has a radius on it. Do that twice over forty years and the profile is a suggestion. The fix is not skill with a brush, it is subtraction: take the old film off or knock it back hard, then put back the thinnest sound coating that will survive a kitchen.

Working in an occupied Pasadena house shapes the rest of it. We pull doors and drawer fronts and finish them flat, off site or in a contained bay, so they cure without dust falling into a horizontal surface. Face frames and boxes get done in place with real containment. Pre-1978 housing means the layers underneath may contain lead, so nothing gets dry sanded open on a hunch. And the local weather is not neutral: hot dry inland afternoons and Santa Ana wind flash the surface of a coating faster than the body of it can level, which is why we do not spray finish coats at two in the afternoon in September.

What Refinishing Costs Next to Replacing

Cabinet pricing follows door count, profile depth and how many layers have to come off. A flat slab door is quick. A five-piece door with a bead and a cove is not, because every tool has to get into the corner. Ranges below assume a kitchen of about twenty doors and six drawer fronts, and we put a firm figure in writing after we have looked at the backs of the doors.
