Urban Farm Obsessives

Back in December a cool crew from CBS Chow came out to the urban farm to do a series of tips on chicken keeping. The results are amusing if not helpful for newbie urban chicken keepers (Note to Chiraag: notice the backdrop on the coop tip).

Egg Layers vs. Meat Birds- or want the best of both worlds? Get dual purpose!

Oh my goodness! You were MADE for video!! aren’t you fantastic.

And I was planning to move to buffs anyhow, really. . .

Thanks Stefaneener! I like Buff Orpingtons. And though I like the green eggs of Auracaunas, I do not like the breed so much- way to skittish.

Saw you on Chow! Good work :) But I want 10 minute videos, not 40 second ones :(

Query: I understand that off-gender specific-purpose birds are destroyed when young. Doesn’t the multi-purpose bird let you skip that?

I would think that a multi-purpose bird for normal people would be a no-brainer, because I’d think the advantages of the specific birds would be too small to show up on the balance sheet of a normal person.

Roger: Thanks! I am not sure what you mean by off-gender…if I have an unwanted rooster, I eat it. Roosters are wonderful and having one in the flock would be great. Unfortunately Oakland ordinance does not allow it.

Great observation! I think, in terms of specific purpose birds, someone that knows they will not eat their hens may do better to keep layers only. I suspect bulky birds eat more.
